Performance characteristics of EPDM with ethylene propylene adhesive

🕙 2023-10-12 👆

EPDM is a ternary copolymer composed of ethylene, propylene, and non conjugated dienes. Its full English name is Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer, abbreviated as EPDM. The main chain of this rubber is composed of chemically stable saturated hydrocarbons, which only contain unsaturated double bonds in the side chain, making it excellent in ozone resistance, heat resistance, weather resistance, and other aging resistance properties.

EPDM began commercial production in 1963, with an annual global consumption of approximately 800000 tons. Its main characteristics include superior oxidation resistance, ozone resistance, and erosion resistance. This rubber belongs to the polyolefin (PO) family and therefore has excellent vulcanization properties. Among all rubbers, EPDM has the best oxidation and ozone resistance, and can maintain good performance at high temperatures.

Due to its excellent weather and heat resistance, EPDM is widely used in fields such as automotive components, waterproof materials for construction, wire and cable sheaths, heat-resistant hoses, adhesive tapes, and automotive seals. Its excellent performance makes it widely used in various occasions that require weather resistance, heat resistance, and ozone resistance, making it a very valuable rubber material.

The main chain formed by copolymerization of ethylene and propylene does not match the double chain, resulting in excellent heat resistance, aging resistance, ozone resistance, and stability. However, sulfur addition is not possible. To solve this problem, a small amount of the third component with double chains can be introduced into the EP main chain and sulfur can be added to form EPDM.

General operating temperature range: -50-- -150 ℃ Excellent resistance to polar solvents such as alcohols, ketones, ethylene glycol, and phosphate ester hydraulic oils.

Advantages: It has good weather resistance and ozone resistance, excellent water resistance and chemical resistance, can use alcohols and ketones, is resistant to high-temperature steam, and has good impermeability to gases. High corrosion resistance, high insulation, and alkali resistance

Disadvantages: Not recommended for food use or exposure to aromatic hydrocarbons, not resistant to oil or acid

Commonly used: seals for high-temperature water vapor environments, seals or parts for bathroom equipment, rubber parts in braking (braking) systems, and seals in radiators (car water tanks). Make wear-resistant materials, high-voltage cable materials, rubber parts in braking (braking) systems, seals in radiators (car water tanks), wear-resistant materials, or high-voltage cable materials.
