Advantages and disadvantages of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)

Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), also known as polystyrene butadiene copolymer. Its physical structure performance, processing performance, and product usage performance are similar to natural rubber. Some properties such as wear resistance, heat resistance, aging resistance, and vulcanization speed are better than natural rubber. It can be used in combination with natural rubber and various synthetic rubbers, and is widely used in the production of tires, tape, rubber pipes, wires and cables, medical equipment, and various rubber products. It is the largest universal synthetic rubber variety, It is also one of the earliest rubber varieties to achieve industrial production.

According to the polymerization process, styrene butadiene rubber is divided into emulsion styrene butadiene rubber (ESBR) and solution styrene butadiene rubber (SSBR). Compared with the solution polymerized styrene butadiene rubber process, the emulsion polymerized styrene butadiene rubber process has a greater advantage in cost savings. Approximately 75% of the global production capacity of styrene butadiene rubber plants is based on the emulsion polymerized styrene butadiene rubber process.

A copolymer of butadiene and styrene, compared to natural rubber, has uniform quality and less foreign matter, but weaker mechanical strength. It can be mixed with natural rubber for use.

Advantages: uniform quality, less foreign objects, low-cost non oil resistant material, good water resistance; Hardness below 70 has good elasticity and can be used with most neutral chemicals and dry organic ketones, which are better at heat resistance, wear resistance, and aging resistance than natural materials.

Disadvantages: Non oil resistant materials have weaker mechanical strength and poor compression performance when subjected to high hardness. It is not recommended to use strong acids, ozone, oils, fats, and most hydrocarbons.
